Article 9: Looking to future projects in the Q1 SP scene.
Introduction:
So, it's the end of QExpo, let's sum up what's happened for Quake single player, and what to look forward to in the future.
Before QExpo...
Right from the early days of Quake, there have always been high quality single player maps and within a couple of years of it's release, many classic maps and packs were released. Then Quake2 was released, and many people moved onto that - and later games - leaving Q1 SP rather quiet for a while. But since TEAMShambler opened, Q1 SP releases have been gradually increasing in both quality and quanitity - although there have been many peaks and troughs, with months of several releases alternating with months of no releases, the overall trend has been for a gradual increase in mapping activity. New mappers have come to the fore and established themselves in the scene, while veteran mappers have honed their skills with some memorable maps, and special features like the 100 brush contests and speedmapping events have encouraged fresh dimensions to Q1 SP mapping. In particular, the first 7 months in 2001 have been very productive - possibly the best period of Q1 SP mapping ever - with many good and innovative maps, both from new and old mappers.
During QExpo...
As befits a celebration of Quake's thriving scene, the Q1 SP mapping scene has been very active during QExpo, with a wide variety of releases from both veteran and new mappers. 7 high quality Q1 SP releases were released and reviewed here and at TEAMShambler, with a total of 11 individual maps from 10 different mappers. And many Q1 SP speedmaps and a 100 brush map were reviewed here, not as high quality, but a few interesting maps there, with even more mappers trying their hand. Nothing more to say except read about them and play them.
After Qexpo...
In the future, there's still plenty to look forward too: Quake provides unlimited themes and ideas to explore, the gameplay has a uniquely visceral style that will be entertaining for many years to come, and the increasing popularity of single player mapping is very promising for future releases. Here's a list of all the current projects I'm aware of, announced both before and during QExpo, and listed by mapper:

Of course, all successful, high quality Q1 SP releases will be reviewed at TEAMShambler Quake Level Reviews, which will also have all the latest news on these and any future Q1 SP projects. Enjoy what's been released so far, and what will be released in the future - Quake single player is going strong and hopefully will be for a long time yet.
